More recycling changes for 7 cities

Residents in several Salt Lake County cities will have to pay a little more attention to what they put in their recycling bins.

The Trans-Jordan Landfill board has decided to limit the kinds of materials that it will accept through its recycling program. There are now three categories of accepted materials: corrugated cardboard, plastics bottles and jugs with necks and metal food cans.

Materials like newspaper, paper bags, junk mail, cereal boxes and styrofoam are no longer supposed to be placed in the recycling bin.

The affected cities include Draper, Midvale, Murray, Riverton, Sandy, South Jordan and West Jordan, many of which have been quick to alert their residents to the change on their social media platforms.

The change is just one of many in what has been a turbulent market for the recycling industry lately. China, the world's largest buyer of recyclable materials for a long time, has recently changed its policy to only accept non-contaminated materials.

This has forced businesses in the recycling industry to be a little more strict about what they will accept in their recycling bins.
