Ryan Barnes receives ‘Star of the Year’ at Epilepsy Gala
The annual gala for epilepsy awareness, “Night Among the Stars,” held in November gave Midvale resident Holly Ferrin a chance to put the spotlight on epilepsy.
According to Ferrin, one in 26 people develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Her ultimate goal is to develop a support group for those with epilepsy, but until then, she has volunteered her time and energy to epilepsy-related events throughout Midvale and Salt Lake.
One such project is Camp Spike and Wave, where Ferrin started as a volunteer. She is now the director for the summer camp for youth, ages 10 to 18, who deal with epilepsy.
Ferrin nominated a camper from Spike and Wave who received the “Star of the Year” award at the “Night Among the Stars” gala.
Lehi resident Ryan Barnes is one of the older youth at cam, who spent his time there helping and encouraging others. “There was one camper in particular who had more disabilities than the rest,” Ferrin said. “He had epilepsy but was also deaf, among other things. Ryan always helped him be involved and encouraged him to do his best.”
Even though he’d recently been diagnosed with epilepsy himself, Barnes helped his fellow campers get beyond their insecurities.
Midvale Mayor JoAnn Seghini was the keynote speaker at the gala. She began her speech by revealing her personal experiences with epilepsy. “I know what it’s like to deal with a family member with epilepsy,” she said
Glenn Fenster, another speaker at the event, biked across America to raise awareness of epilepsy in 2007. Originally from Florida, Fenster made a stop in every state on his journey. While in Utah, he was provided with food and supplies to help him along his journey. “In some other states, he didn’t receive any recognition or help at all,” Ferrin said.
Ferrin encourages those to step out of their comfort zones and volunteer. The Epilepsy Association of Utah is always looking for sponsors or donations.
“We want to make it possible for people with epilepsy to live their daily lives,” she said.
