Eagle scout creates soccer fields for community

Eric Walker, 16, is a Hillcrest soccer player who went out of his way to make sure everyone could have as much fun as he does playing the sport he loves.

As a varsity goal keeper for the soccer team at Hillcrest High School, Walker has the biggest job of all: to make sure the other team doesn’t score. In this case, he had to make sure he could help his entire community score. He was disappointed at Midvale’s lack of soccer fields. It was his goal to change that.

Walker took on the project of creating public soccer fields in Midvale as part of his Eagle Scout projectA lot of thought was put into his project. Walker worked alongside Midvale City’s recreation department to find a good location for the fields. It was decided the park behind Win Co. on 7020 south and 700 West had plenty of space and wasn’t being used for anything else.

Walker and those who helped were able to install soccer goals made for high school sized regulations with room for smaller fields on the side. People can now bring their own goals to play on these smaller fields.

Walker received help from more than 12 people, including family friends and other scouts.

“When I see people playing, having a good time, I’ll feel good knowing I helped,” Walker said

Along with community members, Copperview Recreation Center is looking into using the soccer fields for future programs.
