
Midvale schools help community get into holiday spirit
This holiday season, Midvale school children will bring music to many and help those in need with donations of food, mittens and coats.
Midvale School Holiday Concert: Four choirs will perform at the annual Midvale School Holiday Concert at Midvale’s Performing Arts Center, 695 West Center Street. At 10 a.m., Dec. 10, Copperview students will sing, followed by the 11 a.m. performance of Midvale Elementary’s choir. At noon, East Midvale students will perform, followed by Hillcrest High’s vocal ensemble at 1 p.m. Santa is expected to give children candy canes.
Copperview Winterfest: About 800 people will be at Copperview Elementary’s 5th annual Winterfest, which will feature student performances, artwork and decorations. Santa’s helper is expected to make a special appearance at the Dec. 15 event held at the school, 8449 South 150 West. It begins at 6 p.m.
Copperview student council held a Thanksgiving-time food drive for the Utah Food Bank and is planning a second food drive in January.
Midvale Elementary Concert and Community Service: Midvale Elementary’s 30-member choir will perform its holiday program at 10:30 a.m., Dec. 12, at the Midvale Senior Center, 350 Park Street.
East Midvale students will perform the musical, “Santa and the Stowaway,” at 6:30 p.m., Dec. 14, in the school auditorium, 6990 South 300 East. About 70 students, mostly second- through sixth-graders, will perform the one-act production, which they began rehearsing in September.
“My dad taught school and I found it in his file and thought it would be lots of fun,” said fourth-grade teacher Karalee Birima, who along with parent Maren Evans, is directing the play.
At 11 a.m., Dec. 7, students are planning to hang ornaments on the tree at the nearby branch of Zions bank at159 W Center St.
The school student council also is making plans to serve a holiday dinner at the Midvale Senior Center.
East Midvale Service Work: East Midvale faculty members are providing items for about six families this year and will accept community contributions of clothing, books and toys. Donations are accepted in the main office until Dec. 15, said school psychologist Brandon Segura.
East Midvale’s student council has organized a “We can make a difference” food drive for the Utah Food Bank and will accept community donations through Dec. 14, said fifth-grade teacher Lisa Hubbard, who advises the 11-member student council with fourth-grade teacher Kathryn Brog.
“After making more than 100 fleece blankets for the Road Home and donating $1,4000 for KSL’s Quarters for Christmas the last two years, the student council wanted to find another way to give back to the community,” Hubbard said, adding that the council also helps with service at the school.
Midvale Middle Concerts: Midvale Middle students will perform three holiday concerts. At 7 p.m., Dec. 6, students will perform a dance concert, followed by a 7 p.m. choir concert on Dec. 13. An instrumental concert is scheduled for 7 p.m., Dec. 15. All performances will be held in the school auditorium, 7852 South Pioneer Street.
Hillcrest High Concerts: Hillcrest choral students will sing “Forgotten Carols,” starring Michael McLean, held at Cottonwood High School, 5715 South 1300 East in Murray, Dec. 5 through 12. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available through www.deseretbook.com.
At Hillcrest High, 7350 South 900 East, students will perform a 7 p.m., Dec. 15 choral concert and a 7 p.m., Dec. 15 instrumental concert.
