Holiday fun found at Ruth Vine Tyler and Whitmore Libraries

Local libraries are hosting several activities this month to get everyone, young and old alike, excited about the holidays.

Tyler Library is inviting families to its Polar Express party, Monday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. “We will read the book with a slideshow presentation that has Liam Neeson as the narrator,” party organizer and librarian Daniel Sorenson said. “It’s a great adaptation.”

That’s not all, though. Crafts will be made and holiday goodies will be eaten. At 8 p.m., a jolly special guest will arrive. If you would like to avoid the long lines and high prices to see Santa at the mall, make sure you clear time for this event. Children can tell Santa what they want just in time for Christmas, and parents can bring their camera to take pictures.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, you can drop in at Tyler Library anytime between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to make a candy train craft. On Wednesday, Dec. 21, Tyler Library will also host a family movie night at 6:30 p.m. Prep & Landing, an animated Disney television special about an elite unit of Elves, will be featured.

Whitmore Library will have a magic mailbox up the whole month of December for children to come and drop off their letters to Santa. Dec. 5-8, children can search the library for a paper candy cane. If they can find it, they get to exchange it for a real candy cane.

The two weeks before Christmas, the story of Mouse’s First Christmas by Lauren Thompson will be displayed throughout the building. Children can follow the arrows to read the whole story and get a treat at the end.

Teens need not feel left out. Whitmore Library is hosting two holiday parties for teens, ages 12 to 19. The teen advisory board party is on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. “The teen advisory board is an ongoing group, but teens are welcome to join that day,” librarian Kira Moody said. “We’re having a pizza and potluck. We’ll supply the pizza and teens can bring their favorite holiday treat.”

The teen anime party will be on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 6:45 p.m. A holiday anime movie will be shown, and Japanese treats will be served.
