How to train and eat like an Olympian (when you're definitely not one)

230 days ago1633 views

My knee is wrapped tighly with an elastic bandage and I'm trying not to limp around. I was slammed by a delivery person who couldn't see where he was going and he rammed me from behind with a fully loaded dolly. I'm bored with my rehab exercises, but I have to do them so I can ski this winter.

It's a coincidence that I discovered an ongoing series of inspiring and interesting online clips on the United States Ski and Snowboard Team website. See how the teams train. See them rollerblading uphill. Learn what they eat. Learn what to eat after exercise for recovery (or just good, healthy eating.) Get it all straight from the horse's mouth -- the gurus of the USSA teams.

My favorite clip is tips on what to eat after mild exercise. Based on my level of fitness compared to USSA team athletes, no matter how hard I would exercise, I'd still be in the mild exercise category! It's presented by dietician and nutritionist Adam Korzun -- the Teams' food coach.

Right there I learned something. The athletes get food coaching. After all, they travel around the world to compete, and must make wise food choices at home and abroad rather than relying on too many pizza, wienerschnetzels or perogies.

The clips I watched that were shot indoors were all taken at the USSA Center of Excellence in Park City, Utah. So you'll get a look at the wonderful facility. It's a national training and education center providing world-class training facilities and serving as an educational resource for the USSA's athletes, coaches, officials, clubs, parents, volunteers and other stakeholders nationwide.

The USSA's Center of Excellence is a state-of-the-art facility designed to serve today's athletes with world-class facilities and to strengthen the development of tomorrow's Olympic skiers and snowboarders. It was designed to replicate the style and feel of a college campus, inspiring athletes to a higher level of athletic excellence. It is being built to serve athletes and be their home!

And yes, it does include the state-of-the-art kitchen that you'll see in the background. Athletes learn how to choose and prepare healthy meals for themselves.

So whether you watch the clips for entertainment or information, know that you're rubbing shoulders with Olympic-quality athletes and their trainers.

Now I think I'll get some yogurt and some of those little flat sandwich buns. I need a snack.
