Chanci Loran to head up Copperview Elementary

Chanci Loran is so excited to start the school year at her new elementary, she can barely sit still.

“I want to make connections with parents and students alike -- the faculty and the community,” she said. “I want to set high expectations and help students and teachers achieve them.”

Loran’s new position was announced during the Canyons School District board meeting in August. She was transferred from her position as assistant principal at East Midvale Elementary.

Initially Loran was to be Copperview’s assistant principal. Then the former Copperview principal, Michelle Clark, announced she was retiring at the end of July. Loran applied and was chosen to move into the principal position.

Loran taught school for six years, instructing Kindergarten, fifth-grade and second-grade students. She earned her teaching degree from Jamestown College in North Dakota.

She moved to Utah when her husband’s job transferred them to the area. Loran got her master’s degree in education from Southern Utah University in Cedar City.

When Loran was a child, she would play “school” with her friends and relatives. Her “students” sat on pillows and listened to her instructions. Other times her “students” didn’t pay attention and that was a little frustrating.

“I always wanted to be a teacher -- and then I wanted to become a principal,” she said. “I’ve always had a passion for working with children.”

Loran has many goals as the new principal of Copperview. She wants to start a weekly family literacy center where parents can come and use the school for children’s homework help, translation services, parent education, computer and Internet access. “I want to open up our school to the community to use as a resource,” she said.

Each class at Copperview will represent a different college or university. “I want to instill in the school that college is an attainable goal for all of our students,” Loran said.
