Music and movies in the park continue this summer thanks to the Midvale Arts Council.

All the events are free and are on the outdoor stage in the Midvale Park, 455 West 7500 South, Midvale.

-Friday, June 24, is the movie "Operation Petticoat" preceded by military-themed music provided by the 23rd Army Band.

-Friday, July 23, is the movie "A Christmas Story" with a Christmas karaoke contest.

-Friday, Aug. 12, is "42nd Street" with Broadway karaoke contest.

All these events begin at 7:30 p.m. Prizes for the karaoke contest are $100, $75 and $50.

Karaoke winners will be judged by popularity. People can buy a ballot for $1 and vote for their top three favorites. There will also be official judges.

"We try to offer a variety of activities for our program," said Suzanne Walker, co-chair of the Midvale Arts Council.

Seeing the old-time movies in the park during the summer will be great fun, said Paige Moore, Midvale Arts Council member.

"Operation Petticoat" is a World War II comedy.

"42nd Street" is about a director who puts on a successful stage production during the height of the Great Depression.

"A Christmas Story" takes place in the 1940s when a little boy named Ralphie has to convince his parents, teachers and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect gift for Christmas.

"In all my life, I have met only one person who didn't like the movie 'A Christmas Story,'" Moore said. "Everyone I know loves the movie and I think it will be a huge hit to have such a classic holiday show."

The community program costs the city $2,500 and comes out of the Midvale Arts Council's annual budget. "We feel the community is really getting a good bang for their buck," Walker said. "We are very conscious about how we spend the money."

Funds are allocated toward movie rental royalties, screen set-up and prizes.
