Arts in the Park brings fun concerts to Murray

343 days ago429 views

Murray Arts in the Park is ready for another summer filled with great entertainment opportunities. On Saturday, June 11 at 8 p.m. at the Murray Park Amphitheater (160 East 5300 South), Marvin Payne and the house band Enoch Train will combine music and storytelling in a unique performance formatted after an old-time radio show. The concert will highlight the places and stories of the people who pioneered the Murray area.

"Clive Romney, a talented musician and leader of Enoch Train, and a resident of Murray, has headed up this effort to create a heritage festival and evening concert," Murray Cultural Director Mary Ann Kirk said. "He has composed original music to enhance stories from Murray pioneers."

Preceding the concert from 4 to 8 p.m., a free heritage festival will be held near the Murray Park gazebo. The festival will feature hands-on demonstrations in lace-making, rag dolls, rug-making, pioneer laundry and old-fashioned games. In the event of rain or flooding at Murray Park, the festival will be moved to Murray High School (5440 South State Street).

For theater lovers, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" will open at the amphitheater on June 22 and run through June 30 (excluding Sundays). Directed by Karyn Tucker, the production is presented by Tams-Witmark, with funding assistance from the Salt Lake County ZAP program and the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.

"Percy, the precursor to Zorro, and his loyal followers, dart in-and-out of France, rescuing prisoners by day and living the grand, elite life by night," Kirk said. "Plan on attending this magnificent musical and find out if the hero will get the girl."

Tickets for these events can be purchased at the Murray Parks office or at the gate: $8 for adults, $6 for children and seniors.

Murray's free lunch concert series begins on Tuesdays at noon in the Murray Park pavilion 5. In the event of flooding, the concerts will be moved to the Heritage Center (10 East 6150 South). The following entertainers are scheduled to appear:

June 14: Swing N'Jive

June 21: Maggie Beers and Julie Marks (folk music)

June 28: Glastonbury Duo (celtic music)

July 5: Michael Boots Robinson (cowboy poetry and music)

The children's matinee series held on Fridays at 2 p.m. at the same park pavilion will feature:

June 10: Tunes and Tales

June 17: Roots of American Music

June 24: Zany the Clown and Joe Cool

July 1: Interactive Theater

July 8: Imagination Station Puppet Sing-a-long

In the event of flooding, these activities will be moved to the Murray City Library (166 East 5300 South).

Also, free family concerts will be held at the Heritage Center on Monday, June 13, featuring Lark & Spur, and on Monday, June 11 with Kid Fiddlers.

Two concerts are scheduled for Saturday, July 2 and July 9. The Murray Symphony orchestra will present the first concert with an evening of traditional music and popular favorites. The second event will be the Murray Concert Band performing a joint concert with Gabriel.
