The Planets

West Valley City - The West Valley Symphony of Utah presents a concert featuring the “The Planets” by Gustav Holst, under the direction of Music Director Donny Gilbert, Saturday, April 13th at 7:30 p.m. ‘Helios Overture’ by Danish composer Carl Nielson gets its Greek name for the sun, which in the Greek mythology is drawn across the sky by four majestic horses. In his overture, Carl Nielsen describes the path of the sun, as he himself experienced it in the hot, Greek climate. ‘The Planets’ written between 1914-1916 by British composer Gustav Holst represents all the known planets of the Solar System seen from Earth at the time, and their corresponding astrological character. Mars, the Bringer of War leads off the program. Angry and ominous, Holst’s first movement represents the Roman god of war, Mars. Venus, the Bringer of Peace follows angry red Mars. The music is slower and beautifully eerie with solo violin passages to call to mind the Roman goddess. Mercury, the Winged Messenger is fast and powerful in equal measure. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity is impressive and majestic representing the King of the Gods. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age is a shift from the positive music heard in Jupiter. The opening is slow and almost unsettling, until the music expands into a heavy march. Uranus, the Magician shows the power of this icy planet, represented in Greek mythology as the god of the sky. The last movement Neptune, the Mystic, includes a mystical choir, which gives the music an other-worldly quality. The West Valley Symphony, now in its 28th season is an all-volunteer orchestra of nearly 70 musicians, performing 3-5 concerts each year. We appreciate the hospitality of the staff of the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. Admission is Free. No tickets required
